“Are you kidding me, woman?” Cyrus said aloud, barely resisting the urge to ball up the paper.

Did she think he would just give her back? That he could not protect her against anyone who tried to steal her away?

How much of this letter was a lie to persuade him, he wondered, and how much of it was Daisy’s grandmother’s true feelings about her granddaughter?

There was one thing he knew: how it felt to be raised by someone who disdained you. Condescension dripped off these pages. Daisy’s grandmother probably treasured her in a way that his mother and stepfather never did, but there was no way this woman had understood the young girl who lost her parents.

He calmed his breathing. There it was again. He was letting himself feel something for her, a dangerous path. Why had Queen Morgana sent him the letter in the first place? She certainly had no interest in Madame Pendleton’s offer or she would have summoned him to her. She was only sending this to him because she knew it would stir his sympathy for her.

Hmph. He was certainly not falling for that. Morgana was the only person who even came close to knowing him well enough to guess at his mind, but she was still a high faery and she was hung up on some courtly ideal of love that would never work for a man like him.

Daisy was fine to bear his children and satisfy his needs. She was, at least, attracted to him, which was more than he could say for other women of the court who were too frightened of him to entertain the thought. But he would never let her be any more than that.

The girl needed to be kept in her place.
